A great everyday backpack is comfortable to carry around, and it’s better if it is waterproof and has special compartments for gadgets such as your laptop. It should even look great since backpacks is a fashion item.
But if you’re looking for the best anti-theft backpack you can carry every day, you may want to focus on getting one with at least one (or better yet, all) of these safety features:
- Hidden Zippers
- Lockable Zippers
- Anti-Slash Fabrics
- RFID Blocking Fabrics
- Secure Straps
Hidden Zippers
You’d be surprised to find out just how many thieves simply open the zippers of their victim’s backpacks. These criminals can be so brazen that they can open the zippers even while you’re carrying the backpack. But a hidden zipper can discourage them because the zipper is hidden away and located on the back panel.
Some thieves don’t even bother with backpacks when they can’t find the zippers since they know that in many places, they have easier targets they can choose.
Lockable Zippers
Your zipper may have a puller through which you can set a padlock so criminals can’t open the zippers to get to your stuff. Some backpacks are designed so that even a single padlock can secure several compartments all at once.
Locks are great when you’re on the move, as you don’t give these thieves enough time and opportunity to pick the locks. The sight of a padlock can be very discouraging for thieves, since once again they may just target other backpacks without these pesky security devices.
Just try to use padlocks that won’t be too bothersome to open yourself. If it’s too much of trouble opening a padlock, you might just end up not using these padlocks at all.
Anti-Slash Fabrics
Hidden zippers and padlocked zipper pullers may not deter criminals who will just use a knife or a razor to slash through the backpack fabric. But many modern backpacks these days feature the use of anti-slash fabrics.
These are tough enough that a knife or a razor can’t just cut open the fabric. Even sharp implements that can deal with leather can’t stand a chance against these modern fabrics.
The downside to these fabrics is that they can add considerably more money to the final cost of the backpack. On the other hand, it’s a great investment especially if you tend to carry items such as your wallet and your expensive smartphones and cameras in your backpack.
RFID Blocking Fabrics
These fabrics prevent gadgets that can shield items such as your passport and your credit cards from identity thieves. These criminals employ special gadgets that read the data from your credit card right through the fabrics of regular backpacks.
If you have anything inside the backpack that can be scanned from the outside, you’ll want to use backpacks with RFID-blocking fabrics.
Secure Straps
These let you secure your backpack to a pole, so you have a reasonable expectation about finding your backpack unmolested if you have to leave it attended.
All these safety features can prevent you from getting your stuff nicked. Just avoid dodgy areas, though, so you can avoid getting mugged the old-fashioned way!
